The Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance allows National SAKI Site Grantees to utilize SAKI funding for advanced testing such as Forensic Genetic Genealogy. SAKI funds may be allocated to provide additional testing on cold case homicides that have a nexus to sexual assault. “Nexus” refers to a cold case homicide that presents evidence of possible sexual assault.  In many  cases, cold case evidence may not be ideal for testing; however, understanding your options with new technology or testing capabilities may assist your investigation.

If your agency is interested in learning more, please contact the SAKI Site Coordinator at 406-444-5896.

Notice of Federal Funding and Federal Disclaimer

May SAKI funding be used to test any cold case homicide evidence?

No. SAKI grantees shall only use funding for cold case homicides with evidence of sexual assault.

What type of advanced testing is available?

The SAKI Site Coordinator, lab representative, and detective will collaborate to allow the agency to make an informed decision about testing options. Forensic Genetic Services (FGS) provide an innovative approach for possible evidence testing, analysis, and genealogical research for cold cases. By working with a lab, we can identify the evidence in custody, review the case facts, and make a plan for evidence submission.

What labs perform advanced testing?

Many private laboratories offer advanced opportunities such as FGS. We will work together to find a private laboratory that will meet your needs.

Does SAKI collect data about cold case evidence submissions?

Yes, the SAKI Site Coordinator will partner with the agency to complete the necessary forms.
