Montanans May Now Seek Compensation from Western Union Fund for Fraud Victims

Montanans who were deceived into sending payments to scammers using Western Union’s wire transfer service may now apply for compensation from a $586 million fund administered by the federal Department of Justice.  This fund is related to a multi-state settlement with Montana Attorney General Tim Fox and 49 other states, the District of Columbia, and Western Union that was first announced in January.  Montanans may be eligible to receive compensation if they were a victim of a fraud-induced transfer using Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017.

Montanans who reported to Western Union or to the Federal Trade Commission that they had been the victim of a scam using Western Union may receive a claim form in the mail from the claims administrator, Gilardi & Co., in the days ahead. The form will contain a claim ID and PIN number, as well as instructions explaining how consumers may file their claim to receive compensation. “Many different types of scams were carried out over several years by con artists who instructed their victims to send funds via Western Union.  These dishonest schemes included romance scams, fake sweepstakes, and grandparent scams.  Needless to say, these consumers never received what they were promised after they wired money to the scammers,” said Attorney General Tim Fox.  “I encourage all Montanans who may be eligible for a refund to file a claim by the deadline and to contact my Office of Consumer Protection if they have any problems doing so,” Attorney General Fox added.
