8 HOURS POST APPROVED!
Police Response to Suicidal Subjects is a eight-hour class that deals with one of
the most challenging call types facing law enforcement today. These calls often
appear to be no-win situations for officers and this class is designed to provide a
structured, repeatable, and legally defensible manner in which to respond.
This class will address in detail foundational legal concepts like: Community Care,
Emergency Aid, Exigent Circumstances, Special Relationships, Qualified Immunity,
and our legal duty to care. We will also address the difference between state and
federal law relating to use of force and liability.
Also addressed in detail will be foundational law enforcement concepts like: Tactical Decision Making, Safety Priorities, De-escalation, Opportunity, Officer induced
Jeopardy, Failures, and Contact Team Philosophy. These concepts are integral to
making decisions on how to handle these calls.
We will address questions like: should law enforcement respond, what does our
response look like, what actions can be taken, can we walk away, what is our liability, what is the difference between state and federal law on suicidal subjects,
what is our ability to use force, can/should a SWAT team be used during a suicidal
call, and what is our duty to protect.
Response to Suicidal Subjects
Students will work through different scenarios and the thought process used to
handle each incident. Officers will come away with a better understanding of their
legal duty, ability to walk away, liability concerns, ability to use force, and dealing
with family and the public
