What is the sexual assault kit tracking system?
After a backlog of untested sexual assault evidence kits was discovered across Montana, the 2019 Legislature required the Department of Justice to develop a statewide kit tracking system to hold the criminal justice system accountable and to allow survivors to anonymously track the status of their sexual assault evidence kits whenever they choose.
The system achieves this by recording process updates from healthcare, law enforcement, and forensic analysts in one centralized online location.
For more information about evidence in cases involving sexual offenses, please refer to Title 46, chapter 15, part 4, Montana Code Annotated
