This 40-hour workshop is designed to introduce crime scene investigators to bloodstain pattern analysis by way of lectures, case examples, hands-on experiments and practical exercises. All topics required for IABPA membership are covered in this course. Course is approved by the IAI as a component of certification.

Key areas addressed include:

 Mechanisms by which bloodstain patterns can be produced

 Basic physics and fluid dynamics

 Classify bloodstain patterns by their size, shape, distribution, appearance and location

 BPA terminology

 The scientific method and experimental design

 Understanding and utilizing mathematics to calculate the areas of convergence and areas of origin

 Understanding the limitations of BPA

 Documenting bloodstain patterns via notes, sketches, photographs

 Demonstrating an ability to evaluate and document a basic mock crime scene containing bloodstain patterns.

INSTRUCTORS:
Michael J. Van Stratton, Laboratory Director (Retired), Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Mike has 36 years of experience in BPA and has taught basic and advanced bloodstain pattern workshops for more than 27 years in 24 states and Canada.
Kevin R. Winer, Chief Criminalist Supervisor, Kansas City Missouri Police Department Crime Laboratory. Kevin has 19 years of experience as a bloodstain pattern analyst and has taught basic and advanced bloodstain workshops in 9 states. Kevin is the Chair of the BPA Research Task Group for the BPA sub-committee within the OSAC (the new SWGSTAIN).
