MLEA Pre-Reservations

Any pre-reservations for any class starting with 186 that you may have requested will be subject to the following plan. For future open enrollment dates please refer to Law Enforcement Officer Basic – Montana Department of Justice (dojmt.gov)

  1. Starting on May 1, 2024 we will start taking reservations for upcoming academy classes 9 months before the academy starts.

What this means is on:

May 1, 2024 your agency can email and request the number of slots you are needing for the LEOB 186th academy that starts on February 3rd, 2025.

September 1, 2024 your agency can email and request the number of slots you are needing for the LEOB 187th academy that starts on May 5th, 2025.

December 1, 2024 your agency can email and request the number of slots you are needing for the LEOB 188th academy that starts on August 18th , 2025.

Please contact Julie Adams at [email protected] with your requests.

Once you have made the requests you will be notified by email of confirmation to your requests.

So, the IMPORTANT DATES to put on your calendar to contact MLEA for reservations for LEOB are:

May 1, 2024

September 1, 2024

December 1, 2024

You can find future open enrollment dates here Law Enforcement Officer Basic – Montana Department of Justice (dojmt.gov) these will be updated roughly every 3-4 months.

  1. If you hire an individual prior to any of those dates and they are employed with your agency, contact us as soon as you hire them.  They will be placed into one of the academies at that time.

You DO NOT have to wait for the pre-reservation opening dates.  This means you will not be put on a wait list.

Our recommendation is if you hire someone and since you are required to inform POST within 10 business days of that hire, that you contact us as soon as you contact POST.

These steps will expedite your employee’s enrollment into one of the LEOB academies.

MLEA Basic Courses (PSC-LEOB-CDOB) PRICE INCREASE

For all basic courses that start on or after April 1, 2024, the weekly rate for housing and food will start to increase.

The price increases will happen in conjunction with the start of LEOB courses, however the price will be reflected in the PSC and CDOB course as well.  This incremental price change will ultimately bring the housing portion up to about $66 a week.

As prices for food increase almost every year, so does our food service contract.  As that happens the weekly rate will adjust to account for this as well. The Price Increase Schedule below is only to account for the housing portion and will be adjusted upward if the food contract increases.

Why the increase?

  1. There has not been an increase in the basic cost in nearly 8 years.
  2. Costs have risen. The food contract increased $10 per person per week July 1,2023.
  3. The current cost is $125 per week for food and housing.
  4. $119 of that $125 goes to pay our food vendor.
  5. Housing maintenance costs are increasing.
  6. This only leaves us $6 to pay for housing, which is not enough.  Surrounding states charge from about $20 a night to about $50 a night for housing.

Price Increase Schedule:

DATE                                      Approximate New Weekly Rate

April 1, 2024                                      $135

August 1, 2024                                  $145

February 1, 2025                              $155

May 1, 2025                                       $165

August 1, 2025                                  $175

December 1, 2026                           $185

We apologize for the inconvenience these changes in practice and pricing may cause and hope by communicating this early, the incremental price increases help with the planning of hiring processes and budgeting.

If you have any questions or concerns about these changes, please contact me at [email protected].
